The First Lesson

Some lessons are taught with words.

Others are written in silence.

The next morning, Vespera University woke beneath a heavy quilt of gray clouds.

Rain tapped softly against gothic windows, casting an eerie calm across the campus.

Aurelia had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw those silver-gray eyes watching her from the dim corridor.

"Your scent is changing."

The words echoed in her mind.

How had he known?

She had spent years hiding every trace of her Alpha nature.

No one had ever noticed.

No one.

Yet Professor Cassian Veyre sensed something in mere moments.

The thought unsettled her more than she wanted to admit.

Emily walked beside her through the crowded halls.

"You look terrible."

Aurelia glanced sideways.

"Thank you."

"I mean it as a compliment."

"I don't think that's how compliments work."

Emily laughed.

"You'll survive."

She glanced at the timetable.

"First lecture..."

Her smile faded.
"Oh."

"What?"

Emily looked at Aurelia slowly.

"Ancient Civilizations."

"So?"

Emily lowered her voice.

"...Professor Cassian Veyre."

Aurelia's heartbeat skipped, and she hated that it did.

The lecture hall was unlike any other.

Dark oak walls soared to vaulted ceilings.

Ancient portraits of forgotten rulers hung between towering bookshelves.

A massive stained-glass window overlooked the surrounding forest.

The room smelled of old parchment, cedarwood, and candle wax.

Students filled seats long before the bell.

Whispers died as the door opened.

Professor Cassian Veyre entered.

Dressed sharply, his expression unreadable, he moved to the front without acknowledgment.

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Authority settled over the room without a word.

He placed an old leather-bound book on the desk.

Then—

"Good morning."

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

Cold.

"I am Professor Cassian Veyre."

"I am not interested in excuses."

"If you fail..."

"You fail."

"If you succeed..."

"You earn it."

His silver eyes swept the room.

When they landed on Aurelia—

They paused.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then moved on.

So subtle no one noticed.

Except Aurelia.

Without a word, Cassian picked up chalk.

Across the blackboard, he wrote three words:

History Never Dies

He faced the class.

"Tell me. What destroys kingdoms?"

Hands rose.

"Pride."
"Greed."
"War."
"Betrayal."

Cassian nodded once.

"Correct."

"But incomplete."

He folded his arms.

"The greatest kingdoms are never destroyed by outsiders."

"They fall..."

"...because someone inside opens the gate."

Silence engulfed the room.

Those words felt strangely personal.

Aurelia couldn't explain why.

For a fleeting second—

A burning palace flashed behind her eyelids.

Screams.

Smoke.

Blood.

Then nothing.

The vision vanished as quickly as it came.

She blinked.

Her pulse quickened.

What was that?

Cassian continued as if nothing had happened.

He spoke of ancient kingdoms, forgotten wars, broken alliances, lost bloodlines.

His voice never faltered.

Every student listened.

Even the proudest Alphas stayed silent.

Halfway through—

Cassian closed the book.

"Knowledge without observation is useless."

He scanned the room.

His gaze settled on Aurelia.

"Miss Valerius."

She looked up.

"If history repeats itself..."

"...why do people keep making the same mistakes?"

Every eye turned to her.

Aurelia thought, then answered quietly:

"Because people remember the pain..."

"...but forget the lesson."

Silence.

Cassian held her gaze.

For a heartbeat—

Something softened in his eyes.

Barely perceptible.

"Very good."

From the corner, Vivienne watched.

Not offended.

Not jealous.

Only curious.

Professor Veyre questioned many—

But the way he looked at Aurelia was different.

Not inappropriate.

Not obvious.

Simply...

Familiar.

The thought unsettled Vivienne.

She pushed it aside.

There were more pressing concerns.

The bell rang.

Students packed their things.

"Class dismissed."

As they stood—

Cassian spoke again.

"Miss Valerius."

Aurelia froze.

"You left your notebook."

She turned.

It lay on the desk.

Embarrassed, she approached.

The room emptied until only two remained.

Cassian picked it up.

Instead of handing it over immediately—

His eyes lingered on the silver crest embossed on the cover.

A sun circled by vines.

The ancient symbol of House Valerius.

"So..." he murmured.

"You value old traditions."

Aurelia took it carefully.

"My family does."

Cassian nodded.

"Sometimes, traditions protect us."

"And sometimes..."

His voice dropped.

"They imprison us."

Aurelia searched his face.

Something unsaid lingered in his words.

Before she could ask—

Cassian stepped back.

"You may go."

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Thank you, Professor."

As she left—

Cassian stood still.

His wolf stirred beneath his calm exterior.

She remembers nothing.

He closed his eyes.

"Neither do I..."

he whispered.

"...and that may be what keeps her alive."

Outside—

Vivienne stood by a stained-glass window.

She wasn't waiting.

At least, that's what she told herself.

Aurelia walked past.

Their eyes met for a second.

A chill crawled down Vivienne's spine.

For a fleeting moment—

She saw flashes she couldn't explain.

A palace.

A woman in white.

Fire.

Golden light.

Then it vanished.

Vivienne pressed a hand to her temple.

"What was that?"

Aurelia disappeared down the corridor.

Vivienne remained.

Confused.
Unsettled.

Unable to understand why a stranger suddenly felt like someone forgotten.

Not every memory returns as a name.

Sometimes... it returns as a feeling you cannot escape
