A Promise Written in Blood
The night Aurelia Valerius died, the sky burned a furious red.
Flames clawed at the ancient palace walls, devouring towers that had stood unyielding for centuries. Thick smoke choked the air, filling lungs with ash and despair. Blood soaked the marble courtyard, pooling beneath her trembling hands. The kingdom of Valerius—the most powerful house of its age—was crumbling into ruin.
And at its heart, Aurelia knelt on the cold stone, her once-white gown stained deep crimson.
Every breath was a knife in her lungs.
Every heartbeat felt like it might be her last.
But death did not scare her.
What terrified her was the thought of leaving him behind.
Heavy footsteps thundered across the shattered courtyard.
"Aurelia!"
The voice was ragged, desperate—one she would have recognized even beyond death.
A man fell to his knees before her, his dark clothes torn and streaked with ash and blood. His silver-gray eyes, usually sharp and unreadable, now shimmered with a raw, unfamiliar emotion.
Fear.
Cassian.
He pressed a trembling hand over the wound in her side, as if sheer will could stem the lethal flow.
"No," he choked out, voice breaking. "No. Stay with me."
Aurelia forced a faint, painful smile despite the burning agony.
"You always were terrible at giving orders."
"This isn't a game." His hands shook. "I can still fix this."
"No," she whispered, breath shallow. "You can't."
Cassian shook his head, as if denying the truth could unmake it.
"I won't lose you."
The wind shifted.
A second set of footsteps echoed, deliberate and cold.
Aurelia lifted her gaze.
At the top of the palace steps stood a woman draped in black silk, untouched by the carnage around her. Her dark hair spilled over her shoulders, framing a cruel smile.
Vivienne.
Once Aurelia's closest friend.
The keeper of her secrets.
The architect of her downfall.
Cassian rose, fury igniting his eyes.
"You."
Vivienne's smile didn't waver.
"She was never meant to keep the throne."
Cassian's voice dropped, icy and sharp.
"It was never about the throne."
"No." Vivienne's eyes gleamed with something far older than envy. "It was about her."
Her gaze locked onto Aurelia—sharp, accusing.
"You always had what should have been mine."
Aurelia's strength waned. She could only stare, stunned, as the girl who once stood by her side became the reason her kingdom was burning.
Cassian stepped forward, every muscle taut with lethal intent.
"If she dies tonight, I swear—"
"You'll what?" Vivienne interrupted, voice soft but deadly. "Destroy the world for her?"
Silence fell.
Because the answer was yes.
Aurelia knew it the moment she saw it in him.
That was what terrified her most.
Not death.
Not betrayal.
Cassian.
If she left him, he would burn everything to ash.
"Cassian," she breathed.
He turned instantly.
She reached for his hand. He knelt beside her again, gripping her fingers like holding on to life itself.
"Listen to me."
His jaw clenched, voice rough. "Don't."
"If there is another life..." Her voice faltered. "If there is any world beyond this one..."
His eyes locked onto hers, steel and soul intertwined.
"Find me."
The wind stilled.
Even the flames seemed to hold their breath.
Her fingers curled tighter around his.
"Find me," she whispered again, softer now. "And this time... don't let them take you from me."
A faint golden light shimmered, rising around her like a sacred vow, wrapping their joined hands in a promise neither fully understood.
Vivienne took a cautious step back, her mask cracking.
"What did you do?"
Aurelia looked at Cassian one last time.
"I made him a promise."
Her hand slipped free.
The light vanished.
Cassian remained motionless.
The courtyard was silent except for the crackle of fire and the soft fall of ash.
Then, very slowly, he lifted his head.
His eyes blazed as they found Vivienne.
What she saw there made her stagger back.
Because beyond grief was something far darker.
Rage.
Ruin.
A man who had just lost the only person he had ever loved.
Present Day,
Three centuries later, beneath a cold, gray autumn sky, the gates of Vespera University swung open.
Aurelia Valerius stepped onto campus, a secret buried deep in her blood.
From the faculty wing, Professor Cassian Veyre looked up.
And somewhere, deep beneath forgotten lifetimes—
Two souls remembered...
